Want to hold your own event?
Whether you are a community group, school, workplace, group of friends, sporting club library or an interested Queenslander, here are a list of meaningful event ideas for you.
Host an intercultural dinner
Enjoy a meal with people from culturally diverse backgrounds, not only to enable everyone to share food, but share different perspectives and stories, and learn about cultures different to their own.
Human Library
Organise a ‘human library’ where people ‘borrow’ human books to hear their story. For example, a former refugee may share their story about their journey to Australia. Check out how this has been done in Mackay and Brisbane. Further information on how to plan a human library event can be found from the following libraries:
Guest speaker
Organise a guest speaker with lived experience to talk to your workplace, school, or community group about migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum. You could arrange a speaker through organisations such as the Refugee Council of Australia, Shout Out or the Asylum Seeker Centre. You may like to arrange a speaker who can speak about anti-racism and how to make inclusion work. Organisations such as Diversity Council Australia can help you source a speaker for this purpose.
Cooking class
Arrange a cooking class where the 'head chef’ is not only demonstrating how to cook something from their culture but sharing insights into their culture and sharing their personal story. A great opportunity for participants to ask questions and connect with someone from a culture different to their own.
Film screening
Organise a film screening and facilitate a discussion afterwards about issues raised in the film. The Refugee Council of Australia has a list of films available for screenings.
